Londonderry Lightning Strikes in Providence

The Londonderry Lightning 12U softball team went a perfect 5-0 this past weekend at the North Providence Summer Swing Tournament in N. Providence, Rhode Island. This was the first tournament following a tough defeat in the finals at the Memorial Day Tournament two weeks ago. The Lightning outscored their opponents by a whopping 83 to 6 margin during the 2 day tournament.

The tournament consisted of teams from Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Lightning never trailed in any game. “Every season we try to play in a tournament that requires us to travel,” stated head coach Marc Shay. “This allows for the team and the families to spend time bonding, which is critical for any team to have success.”

The tournament format featured an “open line-up” which meant every player was in the batter order. “This format allowed the coaching staff flexibility throughout the game; in fact we had the girls pick a ‘buddy’ that they would swap in and out every other inning,” Stated Coach Mike Rivard;  this kept the girls loose and in the game mentally and it obviously showed!

Every game consisted of great pitching, timely hitting, aggressive base running and stout defense. “We had all facets of the game going this weekend,” stated Coach Chris Raza, “It was a fun thing to watch.” The games were highlighted by some great pitching from Maryellen Leach, Val Shay, and Katrina Rivard. Offensively, it was a total team effort. The Lightning’s potent offense includes: Kiera Wright, Rachel Simkevich, Lauren Misiaszek, Bethany Costello, Sarah Fawcett, Maeve McPhail, Liz Niven, Haley Parker, Cassidy Raza and Ashley Andrews.

The Lightning next play this coming weekend at the Annual Rochester Summer Slammer tournament in Rochester, NH.   This tournament will be made up of teams throughout New England.

The 10U Lightning team currently boasts a record of 22-4-1. In this District Tournament they went 4-0, scored 57 runs and allowed only 10 runs, which earned them the spot of second seed. Making their fourth consecutive tournament final, the girls were once again matched against rival squad Litchfield for the Championship title.

The Lightning lost, but the team’s overall and outstanding performance earned them a bid to the Babe Ruth State Tournament. The Lightning will look to secure the 10U State title this Friday evening in the first of three round robin games. If they place in the top two in their pool; they will vie for the State title on Sunday.
