A Taste of Greece in Londonderry

Small and quaint, Londonderry’s newest restaurant Gigi’s Kouzina offers traditional homemade Greek fare in a relaxed atmosphere. Gigi’s opened on June 19, 2012 and is owned and operated by Gigi and Billy Palaskas.

The Palaskas family has had experience in the restaurant business for more than 40 years. As owners of Brother’s Pizza on South Willow Street in Manchester, NH, the couple took a short break from the restaurant business to spend time with family in Greece before returning to the area to open Gigi’s. The couple is assisted by their eldest daughter, Tina.

Cooking from family recipes that she’s perfected over the years, Gigi spends much of her time in the kitchen. Gigi’s prides itself that 95% of the food is made in the restaurant from scratch. Pizzas are made from hand-stretched, homemade dough; baklava is made fresh with sweet layers of crust and nuts.

Menu items range from pizza and calzones to pasta, salads and wraps. The restaurant also offers a daily Greek dinner dish, baked fresh each day, that include pastitsio, baked lamb, and haddock plaki. Because the special dinners are made daily, there is limited servings. It is recommended that diners call early to reserve a meal.

Gigi’s offers delivery to all of Londonderry and hopes to expand into other local towns. Their hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 AM until 9 PM; Fridays and Saturdays, 11 AM until 11 PM; and Sundays, 1 until 8 PM.

Gigi’s Kouzina is located at 217 Rockingham Road.  Visit them online.

Local Greek Restaurant hosts Official Ribbon Cutting Opening Ceremony

Gigi’s Kouzina held an official ribbon cutting ceremony today, November 13, 2012, after opening this past summer. The ceremony was spearheaded by the Londonderry Commerce and Visitors Center and was attended by local political figures, including Londonderry Town Council Chairman John Farrell and Londonderry Acting Town Manager Bill Hart.

Gigi’s is owned and operated by Gigi and Billy Palaskas and their daughter Tina. Bringing fresh and traditional Greek and American food to Londonderry, the Palaskas have been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years as owners of Brother’s Pizza in Manchester, New Hampshire. After taking a short break to spend time with family, the Palaskas are back, creating homemade Greek dishes at their Rockingham Road location.

In honor of the ribbon cutting ceremony, Gigi’s Kouzina will be offering 15% off all of their menu items for today only. Be sure to stop in, welcome them to the town, and try some traditional Greek food today!

Out and About Londonderry with Sherry and the CVC

My week started trying to learn more about the Londonderry Commons Plaza. Often during the week, I stop into Jerome’s to have a cup of soup or their famous Tomato and fresh Basil Salad. It’s become a great place to sit, relax and savor homemade, inexpensive cuisine. I never mind sitting there alone, because it’s a guarantee that within a few minutes someone you know will walk through the door.

I decided to find out exactly what our new Little Bye Buys Children’s Boutique was. Sometimes it’s hard walking through a business door ‘cold’ to talk about Visit Londonderry, but in most cases our local businesses are very welcoming and always polite. Within seconds, I was introduced to Ilona, the owner.  She stopped everything she was in the middle of and welcomed me to sit and talk with her. All families in town should stop by and see her.  This is one of the best concepts I have seen in years. You bring your gently used clothing in and right there and then she buys them from you.  You don’t have to come back, and hope to hear something sold, or even worse have to take back with you everything that does not.

While talking about Londonderry and some of our members, I told Ilona at Little Bye Buys about a wonderful new pizza and Greek food restaurant in town by Exit 5. Gigi’s. The next day when I stopped by to say hi to Gigi, I saw Ilona and her husband enjoying lunch and talking with Gigi’s husband. Gigi’s is a must stop, if you haven’t already been.  As a Home Economics teacher in town for years, I can promise you won’t be disappointed!  Gigi makes everything homemade, and it shines through in her flavors.  You have never had fried dough until you’ve tried Gigi’s! Her pizza and calzone dough come from a recipe that originated in Worcester, MA. Have you ever had Homemade Hummus? You’ll be shocked at the difference, Stop in, say hello!  Gigi’s Kouzina is located on Route 28 where the old children’s museum was.

Don’t forget about Blackberries Bakery, too. They will be at the Deerfield Fair this week.  John (the owner) is bringing their delicious cupcakes and warm apple crisp!  We were in this week for some butter cookies to thank our UPS driver for getting our package to us early.  While we told him to share with family, likely they did not survive the trip in the little brown truck.

I’ve lived here for years and had no idea we had a game store right here in town at the Londonderry Commons plaza. They have every electronic game you could imagine, new and used. I’ve driven all over trying to find presents for nephews, and it was there all the time.

When I stopped by to visit Wayne and his family at Elwood Orchards this week, I just took a few minutes to watch and remember as all the little preschoolers climbed on board for their hayride.  The peace and tranquility that you feel at Elwoods is worth the stop.  Many people from all over were picking apples and enjoying the corn maze.

On Wednesday evening this week we held a free class to help educate our seniors and their families about Medicare at our local library.  The turn out was great and the information was so very helpful. After the class my husband John and I decided to go to Cafe Teresa’s and share a light dinner.  Cafe Teresa’s has been taking care of families in Londonderry for many years now.  Did you know that Michael’s Dad, Freddie, originally started the first restaurant there years ago and it was called the Village Deli?

Just yesterday I stopped into meet the new owners of Route 102 Gas and Service.  They are located very close to Exit 4, across from the plaza on the Derry line.  This has been a dream of theirs and back in April they bought the station.  I love getting my gas there, because they pump the gas for you!

My week ended last night at a free Zumba class offered at our newest Fitness place in town, Creative Fitness for Women.  You may have heard about it in the story “Creative Fitness to Host Free Zumba Night” in the Londonderry News.  I was a little nervous to give it a try, but when we were welcomed by Rachael and we saw all the other women, we jumped in to give it a try.  I have not had so much fun or felt so good afterwards in a long time.  The instructor was great, and it didn’t matter if you were a beginner or in great shape, we all enjoyed every step!  If you haven’t already, stop in and see what ‘creative’ programs they have for women of all ages.  The atmosphere is beautiful and Rachael and her staff will help you achieve your goals in a private learning way.  You will make changes that will last a lifetime.

The amazing thing about being part of Visit Londonderry is that I never know exactly where a week will lead. Even though I have lived here since the 60′s, grew up at Kendalwood Condos, taught at the High School, and raised my family here, each day I learn something special about our community. One thing is for sure, Londonderry is the best place to Live, Work and Play! Each week I will share with you some of the amazing businesses and things I have learned about Londonderry.
