Police & Fire Scanners

The Londonderry Police non-emergency line is 603 432-1118 should you need it. Emergency calls should be made to 911.

Did you know the most popular weekly feature of Londonderry Hometown Online News is the Police Log?

Londonderry Police Scanners

Some new options for our readers.

  • You can use the new embedded scanner, very popular with most people. Just press the play button to get started.
  • You can also select the top left text “Londonderry Scanners” to open the player in a pop up window, very nice if you plan on reading more stories on this site or browsing other sites on the internet.
  • Select “Click to use your player” to open the stream in your favorite audio player. The scanner will launch the audio application that you have installed on your computer. You may be asked to open or download a file, select “yes” or “ok” if prompted.

Frequently Asked Questions;

I can not hear anything, what is wrong?

If you are using the embedded player, the simplest option, try turning up your volume on the speaker, in your control panel and then on the screen in the player. You should hear a hum… Be sure to turn it down! Scanners often have times when no one will talk you will only hear audio when the Londonderry fire or police department is transmitting

What is a “10-11″ I hear it all the time.

When the police get back to the station or are in the station they will report “10-11″ when asked for a status or location.

What are those tones right before a fire call, they sure do catch my attention!

On a fire call you will hear the dispatcher indicate what is going to happen. Then the tones, that catch your attention (and the firefighters!) Then they will repeat the call.

Why don’t you put all the calls in the breaking news?

We will work up a page on how and when we do breaking news at some point. Until then, we do the major items for Police and Fire, we do not do all the calls. A example would be we do the Accidents on our roadways, while we do not do someone who is hurt in a home. We also miss some things our staffing levels are not infinite. If you hear a call that should be on the breaking news contact us.

  • Use the scanner list after the 10 codes table
  • Send us a tweet using @LondonderryNH
  • Sign up as an author and you will be able to input breaking news on our home page directly.

I am thinking of getting a digital scanner and think a handheld would be my best choice. In your opinion is the Uniden or the Radio Shack model best for our area? They are pretty expensive and I don’t want to waste my money on second best.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul:

Thanks for the comment. That’s a very good question. As you’ve already indicated, whether you get a handheld or base is a personal preference decision. Whichever one you get however, should be digital if you plan to monitor local and state Police departments.

The vast majority of them have gone digital, including Londonderry. The majority of Fire Departments (like Londonderry) on the other hand are still analog, but a digital scanner will pick those up anyway.

In terms of Radio Shack vs. Uniden, that again is a personal preference decision as each of those brands offer a feature/functionality set that varies between the two. I happen to have both. My RS digital is a Pro-2096 base (Pro-96 is the handheld version) and my Uniden is the BC796D base. Both of these do a good job on digital in this area, but I would give the edge on sound clarity & volume to the RS model. The Uniden however offers alot more features/functionality including the ability to remotely control the scanner via a PC which I really like. It should be noted that Uniden has a more current digital model (996T/396T) than the one I have. Those are the top of the line Unidens.

In addition to RS & Uniden, GRE has just come out with a new line of digital scanners that you may want to consider in your decision making. GRE is the company that made most of the RS scanners over the years and they just struck out on their own. I recently bought the PSR-600 base digital (handheld is PSR-500) and believe this is the best digital scanner on the market today, both in terms of sound and feature/functionality. The price for these compares favorably to both the RS & Uniden models.

Bottomline: My suggeston is to review the specs for all the digital models at the web sites for RS, Uniden & GRE to get a handle on the feature/functionality differences. Then I would suggest reviewing the comments/reviews about all of these scanners at the following site:

    http://www.radioreference.com

Once you’ve done the above, I’m pretty sure you will have what you need to make the best decision for yourself. Sorry for the length of this reply, but as you said this is an expensive decision and time spent researching before you buy is worth the effort.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to post another reply. I’d be glad to help.

Mike Brown, Interesting that you are interested in scanning the police since you have never supported them

I have a Uniden handheld and the APCO card, etc. I am curious, does anyone know why sometimes when I turn it on it says APCO CARD NOT INSTALLED when it is? It’s like I have to turn it off and on a few times. It is about 4 years old and I bought it brand new and rarely use it so it’s in mint condtion……..is it something to do with the programming of the channels? Which, by the way…I don’t know how to update or do it…I had met someone once at Leach Library who was from Concord and programmed mine from his. Fact is, would this be a possibility to do if anyone has more knowledge than I? I would sincerely appreciate having it updated. Let me know, thanks in advance.

    Hi Cyndi:

I don’t know if you guys know this but Uniden makes scanners for radio shack under there name . I think that Uniden makes a way better scanner for there company that is much better quality then the radio shack version that uniden puts out for Radio Shack. I have owned both and I will never buy another radio shack scanner again. I think undien Bearcat scanners are the best on the market. Police have them, news media use them as well. It’s just a way more professional scanner in my opinion !

    Admin,
Back in June you mentioned it would be back up, I have yet to catch it. Any news on when it would be streaming again?
I think it is a great service for those of us without a digital scanner of our own.
    Thanks

It has been up since June, peak listeners has been 18, in December alone we had over 4000 listener connections. Send me your OS and browser. You should see on every page a scanner that you can play or open in a window (we did do a change to that in the last week, Dec 25 if it has bugs we would appreciate input.) This page has the same embedded scanner, plus all pages have a link to use your own player. Right now just an hour after your question we have two listeners. Check if you wish you can give us a call too.

I have XP and I am using internet explorer. I just noticed that the page states “Stream is Currently Down” and when I try it on my player nothing plays just some static. Maybe there is nothing going on but it seems the same each time I try.
    Thanks for getting back

I will check on the “down” we are not currently providing our stats, but I have been experimenting with it, I may have left them on. Yes, we had the stats on for the scanner page but it is not functional it is off now and the scan is up. The last time we were down was 28 days ago for maintenance. We are up, it is very quiet this morning. We were up to 5 listeners now back down to 3. If you turn up your volume you will hear a hum, if no one talks thats all you will hear. It will be loud when it comes on if you volume is up all the way.

It sounds like you do not see the player, the change we made last week may have dropped out the player for IE, if you have FF check that out. The key is to make sure you can connect to the stream, then we can work on the player issue. To others, if you can not see a player let us know, also your OS, Browser and version.

    Thanks. Quiet is good

Yes it is, but can you hear it when they come on? I am debugging the player problem in IE, and will report back on what we find.
