The Great Sign Kerfuffle

Vote Steve Young for School Board in Londonderry NHLocal elections are next Tuesday, March 13th; about 2 out of 10 registered voters will come to the polls.  That handful of Londonderry residents will vote on more than One Hundred Million Dollars of your tax money.  One reminder of this election is the signs you see popping up all over town – at least before the nor’easter hit this week.

Last week, word traveled through the town like northeast winds off the ocean, getting to some candidates faster than others, and some it would appear not at all. The issue? Does your sign identify who paid for the sign?  It is the law, at least it has been for as long as I can remember.  Ten years ago not many of us bothered. Sure it had to be on collateral for national elections, but local? It made little sense.

Before the Great Sign Kerfuffle, you could see the signs had different markings.  Now I am not talking about the “Vote for Me” in big fonts, or the full color designs used to draw your attention.  Some signs, like mine, had “Paid for by” followed by the candidate name, or committee name.  Some had no “Paid for by” at all.  The attorney in the race had, as required by what appears to be a little known law, a full name and address.  A few running had no information on the signs, except a union bug showing that the sign was printed in a union shop.

Somehow, someone contacted the New Hampshire Attorney General to report “illegal signs” in Londonderry.  The moderators were alerted and raced to inspect the signs.  Sure enough many, including myself, did not follow the letter of the law.  Over the following weekend, candidates were contacted.  It appears to have started on Friday; I got word on Sunday.  Communications with the School Board moderator – different from the Town moderator – indicated it was something we did not really have to do.

Knowing how kerfuffles go, I agreed but thought, “This is going to continue to bubble and brew unless the law is followed.” So while my signs had “Paid for by Steve Young” on them, I needed to come up with a sticker.  At this point, many were putting second stickers on the signs – the first ones made out of paper having come off in the rain.  I thought, “What can I say that is within the law but illustrates how silly this is?”

I got it, and created my waterproof stickers.  Running through town after and before work Sunday and Monday, I placed them on with a grin the Grinch would be proud of.  They now said, “Paid for by Steve Young, I live at 7 Fiddlers Ridge Road, Londonderry NH 03053 – But you knew that!”

Label added to Steve Young's School Board Sign 2018 in Londonderry NH

Now the threats of a thousand dollar fine and thoughts of prison were cleared from my mind.  I heard the sign police did inspect my sign, so I know I am safe.  From what I understand, one or more signs still have nothing on them at all.  I do hope nothing happens to these scofflaws, and they get a chance to vote next Tuesday.

Not a single person running in the election next week is a politician, and we shouldn’t be.  We are citizen volunteers that are required to run for office.  For the state or anyone to be worried about finding who paid for our signs is just ridiculous.  Of course that is why they call it “Silly Season” here in New England.

Steve Young

Steve is running for School Board Tuesday after serving three years on the Budget Committee and fifteen years on the School Board.

Tom Freda for Town Moderator, 2018

Letter to the EditorMy name is Tom Freda and I’m running for Town Moderator and I am asking for your vote on Election Day, Tuesday, March 13.

Background and Experience

Since 1998 I have lived in Londonderry with my wife and three sons who grew up in town and graduated from Londonderry High School.

I have been a practicing attorney since 1982 and certified public accountant since 1987.

I have served on the Planning Board for six years and the Budget Committee for three and half years, including one year as Chairman. In March 2011, I was elected to the Town Council and re-elected in March 2014.

As part of my duties while on the Council the last six years I also served as an election official during town, state and presidential elections working with the Town Moderator and Town Clerk to make the election process as efficient and easy for voters as possible, especially during the presidential elections which saw over 13,000 voters cast ballots. I believe that experience is invaluable and will serve to make sure future elections are carried out both efficiently and accurately.

Goals if Elected

If elected as Moderator, I would like to enhance the Town Moderator website by listing in writing the rules governing the procedures that are used at the Town Deliberative Session, so that voters can feel confident in what they can and cannot do at the session. I also believe it is important to involve students as early as possible in the election process and would actively recruit LHS students 17 and over to serve as volunteers on election day.

On Tuesday March 13, 2018, I am respectively asking for your vote for Town Moderator. Thank you.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at Tom.Freda@tjflaw.org or at 781-710-8974.

Michael Saucier for School Board, 2018

Editor’s Note: With the approaching elections, we will publish all candidate position papers, letters in support of candidates, and Letters to the Editor regarding the election.

Letter to the EditorI am happy to announce that I am filing papers to run for one of the two positions on the Londonderry School Board. I am excited about this potential opportunity and feel that I can contribute a great deal to the leadership of our Londonderry School District.

A little over twelve years ago, my wife and I moved to Londonderry because we wanted to raise our two daughters with the best educational opportunities possible. From administration, to teachers, to parents – our experiences with the schools have been nothing but positive and we know we made the right decision making Londonderry our home. Looking ahead, the school system faces many challenges with an increasing student population and budget constraints. My goal as a member of the School Board would be to put the interests of our students first when making any decisions on how to best spend school funds. I would be a visible and accessible member of the School Board who is passionate about our students both inside and outside of the classroom. I would work closely with all stakeholders including administrators, educators, students, and parents to see where the greatest needs are in our schools and find ways to address those needs as quickly as possible.

I have been a high school history teacher in Massachusetts for 16 years and taught courses at Nashua Community College for 8 years. I have two Master’s Degrees in Education, and I am in the second year of a Doctoral program in Education at Rivier University. I have coached multiple sports including Varsity Baseball, I have been an Advisor to extra-curricular clubs such as the National Honor Society, and I have been a member of the Instructional Leadership Team at two different schools. In addition, my wife has been an elementary school teacher for 16 years. I have dedicated my life to education and I believe that with my career experiences and my investment in the school system as a parent, I am highly qualified to be the next member of the Londonderry School Board.

The School Board Election is March 13, 2018 – please get out the vote! Also feel free to contact me any time through Facebook or through email – msaucier818@yahoo.com. Please like my new Facebook page dedicated to my candidacy.

A Letter in Support of Sharon Carson

Letter to the EditorOn November 8 we have more than a presidential decision to make we have a decision on how NH will continue in the future. While it is easy to believe the governor will make the difference the reality is NH form of government has the weakest governor and it was designed to be so. NH was formed in a way that allows the people to have a real voice in how laws are made by making Reps and Senators the strongest part of the process. The future of NH rests to a great degree on the NH Senate and that is the purpose of this letter. Sharon Carson, a Londonderry resident, has represented District 14 which is also Hudson and Auburn with absolute honesty and integrity. When faced with decisions that effect working families Senator Carson always looked to both sides to fully understand the ramifications, the unintended consequences, and voted to protect the working families. We hear a lot about special interest funneling money to candidates and we are then shown how their votes follow the money. Sharon Carson is not one of those people in fact when faced with making a special interest happy at the expense of local property tax payers she chose the working families and sided with taxpayers. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to help the other side she just couldn’t spend other peoples money when she knew at this time they didn’t have any to spare. Her reward was the special interest decided to abandon her because she didn’t do enough for them. I am a taxpayer and I think Sharon Carson does do enough for us and I am sorry the special interest doesn’t understand. Sharon watches our money like we do at home.

Sharon doesn’t back down when she sees something is wrong. When faced with a large group who had a list of ” political celebrities ” on their board, the most notable who stood before her committee demanding immunity for any harm caused by their actions she said no. Few people had done their homework but Senator Carson did. Today you read the cases of children handed back to parents who then used them for child pornography tapings. You see the deaths of young children from the lack of training or supervision of those charged with the oversight of the health and welfare of the abused. The “political celebrities” hoped to create a law where they would hold no responsibility for their actions in the above cases, they didn’t think anyone would care about the children. They didn’t know Sharon Carson.

Sharon Carson deserves our vote, she has our back. She doesn’t cave to threats or fear the loss of special interest support because she represents us. On November 8 please vote for Sharon Carson, State Senator District 14 Londonderry Hudson and Auburn. We need to be heard and our voice needs to remain louder than special interests. Sharon will be our voice
