2009 Veterans Day Ceremonies

With heavy rains coming down the call came in Saturday morning to the newsroom, no celebration on the historic Londonderry Town Common this year.  It has been done in the rain before, with the Londonderry Marching Lancers providing a bugler to help in honoring our veterans.

At 9:30 Al Baldasaro the Vice Commander was not sure what was going to happen as they were unable to reach Commander Jim Sievert.  We assured him that people would come to the  hall and even if it were canceled, those that came would be happy to have tried to attend.   At 9:31 we put out a Breaking News alert that it was on and inside at the Hall.

Londonderry Brownies 1178 and Girl Scout troop 862 hammed it up for us as we waited for all the speakers to arrive.  If you can not view the slide show or would like a full screen version visit our Londonderry Hometown Online News Darkroom “Veterans Day Event 2009

After the event reports came back that people were at the common in the torrential downpour waiting for the veterans to march down the road.  A police action in front of Matthew Thornton had some fooled, it looked like the escort for the Veterans.  If you missed the event be sure to play the slide show, and listen in to the speakers that spoke that day.  You will be particularly impressed with USMC, Major Dan Tamburello who gave a great motivational keynote speech.

Londonderry Honors Veterans in Prayer and School

Londonderry Schools are closed today in honor of Veterans Day.  Rather than a long weekend a moment in the middle of the week to honor those that have served our country.  Yes a day off, but with reminders, announcements and even lessons on the importance of those that served our country.  On Saturday November 14th hundreds of students in uniform will be with the American Legion Post 27 to march to the common and stand at attention as they hear from USMC, Major Dan Tamburello as he provides what is expected to be over 1000 people a motivational speech on those that protect our country.

This morning we have many searching the site for a “Benediction for Veterans Day,” while we do not have one published we have one first done by Jack Martin for Memorial Day in 2007.  For your use and with Jack’s blessing we publish it as Londonderry Reflects on the service of Londonderry Veterans who have served or are serving somewhere in the world.

Jack Martin, Chaplin American Legion Post 27, Londonderry, New HampshireGod manifests his spirit and great love in each of us. For he created us in his image, in his divine image. He created us male and female. He created us, and we were created just a little bit less than the angels and crowned with Gods glory.

There is no greater love than this, to lay down ones life for his friends. This is the reason we are here this day, to give tribute, respect, remembrance and honor to the gallant men and women of our armed forces who obtained Gods glory by laying down their lives for us and others who called upon their help. For they carried themselves as soldiers and they did it with Gods grace.

May God bless their very souls and protect those soldiers who now stand in harms way. Pray to your God as I do to mine, may God bless this country in his love. May God clothe this country in his care. May God forever hold us and ours in his holy embrace and grant us peace for God and for Country.

God Bless America, Amen.

Jack Martin American Legion Post 27

Honor Those Who Serve This Veterans Day

Londonderry will celebrate Veterans Day on Saturday, November 14th at 10:00 am.  Veterans Day is a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.  The parade will start at the Londonderry High School and march to the historic Londonderry Common.   USMC, Major Dan Tamburello of Londonderry will be the guest speaker at the event.  This date also marks the 20th anniversary of American Legion Post 27.  All veterans and their families are welcomed to march.  If you have any questions, you can contact the Senior Vice Commander, Al Baldasaro at 858-3535

Veterans Day was started when World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France.   Fighting had ceased seven months earlier when an armistice or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”  Thirty-five countries fought in World War I. They fought for five years, from 1914 to 1918. The United States fought in the war from 1917 to 1918.

President Wilson made November 11 a holiday to remember the end of the war. The holiday was called Armistice Day.  The body of an unknown soldier was brought to America from the cemetery in France. His body was buried in a tomb at Arlington National Cemetery. It was called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
