“Londonderry Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred at about 1:30 p.m. today, in the vicinity of 163 Mammoth Road. Eric Barbarossa, age 21, of Dracut, Massachusetts, was operating a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix southbound on Mammoth Road, and appears to have entered the northbound lane, colliding head-on with a 2009 Ford F-150 truck being operated by Steven Tornberg, age 63, of Londonderry. “ Said Lieutenant Scott Saunders of the Londonderry Police department moments ago just after 5pm.
Radio reports indicated that DHART was considered but he pilot indicated that conditions would not allow the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport based aircraft to fly.
Barbarossa was initially entrapped in his vehicle and was extricated by Londonderry Fire Department personnel and transported to Parkland Hospital, where he died approximately two and a half hours later. Tornberg was treated for minor injuries at Parkland Hospital.
Londonderry Police Technical Accident Reconstruction (TAR) team has been called in to investigate the accident. Mammoth Road remained closed until 4:50 p.m. while officers investigated the incident.
The accident remains under investigation by Londonderry Police.
Rolling at about 1:30pm Saturday the reports came in that a head on crash had occurred in the area of 163 Mammoth Road. The call dispatched Engine 2, Medic 1 and Rescue 1 under the command of Captain Darren O’Brien. Reports from the scene indicated entrapment and that “One of the vehicles appears to be on fire.” The accident was just south of Kendal Pond Road on (Route 128) Mammoth Road.
Police arrive at 4 minutes confirming entrapment. On arrival just over four minutes after the call Engine 2 reported, “Fire Alarm, Be advised there is no fire here.” Captain O’Brien called Fire Alarm to see if DHART was available. The helicopter based at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport could not fly due to the weather at the time. A second medic was dispatched for Steven Tornberg the driver of the pickup truck for a head laceration. Eric Barbarossa was extricated from the car and prepared for transport about 16 minutes from the Fire Department departing the fire stations.
Police considered activation of the Technical Accident Reconstruction team 10 minutes into the incident, officers on at the crash indicated, “Minimum of serious personal injury or more.” Although the Grand Prix was registered to Eric Barbarossa of Dracut, police record checks indicated the “plates were not on file.”
Information on why that would be according to Lt. Saunders is not available while the accident remains under investigation.

Lee, First and foremost, my condolences to you and your family on the loss of your brother. Clearly his loss cannot be imagined by anyone who would knowingly disrespect you or your family at this time. But…if it was you who wrote an annynomous comment calling out the writer of the article, when in fact the audio clip states exactly what the dispatcher said, the plates came back, “not on file”, well then my friend you can only expect somone to call you out on your error.
This is to Bob – Whenever someone posts on an article involving a death, you never know what sort of relationship the poster has to the deceased and should be very careful in your response. Clearly, Lee was distraught in his first post, indicating a very close relationship. For you to take it upon yourself to criticize his spelling and call him names was unconscionable at best. As a close family friend of the Barbarossa Family, I’m completely shocked and embarrassed by all of the comments made by family members. The serious pain you are feeling is no excuse for the name calling and childish behavior you’re showing. You are seriously tarnishing your family name and you sound like trailor trash.
