Londonderry Sunday School Class Sponsors Two Children

Angela and Newton have new hope for clean water, healthy food, and an education thanks to the children’s Sunday School classes at Orchard Christian Fellowship, a local church in Londonderry, and Compassion International, a charitable organization that serves over one million children in 20 countries worldwide.

The sponsorships were part of a three week “Compassion Sunday” campaign at The Orchard.  Packets with photos of children were placed on a table in the lobby before and after church services, and congregants were encouraged to choose one or more children to support.  In all, members of the church sponsored 39 children.

“The children will collect change at home during the week for Angela and Newton and bring it in to the church on Sunday mornings to cover the cost of sponsorship.  Each child has a picture of Angela and Newton to place on their refrigerator as a reminder to pray for them.  The Sunday school classes will write to their sponsored children asking them questions and describing life in Londonderry. The sponsored child will write back to the classes exchanging the same information” reports Lisa Powers, Director of Children’s Ministry at The Orchard.

Compassion connects each individual child with a sponsor, who donates $38 per month for their care.  The money is administered through local evangelical Christian churches in the child’s village with oversight from Compassion.

“What’s unique about this program,” comments Ken Glasier, senior pastor at The Orchard, “is the one-on-one relationship with the children.  In addition to the exchange of regular letters and prayers, sponsors are invited and encouraged to visit their children and see for themselves the difference they are making.”

Orchard Christian Fellowship meets Sundays at 8:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. in the Matthew Thornton Elementary School gym.  Adult and children’s Sunday School classes takes place in between church services at 10 a.m.  For more information on the Orchard Cristian Fellowship visit the Church website.  To sponsor a child visit the  Compassion International website.
