5 movies to enjoy over the Thanksgiving holiday! (In no particular order.)
1. Planes, Trains & Automobiles
I watched this movie with my family last Thanksgiving and it was a blast! Steve Martin and John Candy are the perfect comedic duo, blowing the likes of
Adam Sandler and Jack Black completely out of the water. Steve Martin plays a man desperately using any means he can to get home to his family for Thanksgiving, accompanied and hindered by the seatmate (John Candy) he met on his grounded flight home. This is the type of movie that has been duplicated over and over in the past two decades, but this is the original and it’s obvious. The hilarious mishaps are unmatched by any imitator, making this a Thanksgiving must-see.
2. Pocahontas
In the mood for an inaccurate and animated version of history? Then this is the movie for you! This Disney classic tells the love story of John Smith
and Pocahontas, and the conflict between the Native Americans and the English settlers. Every kid knows the story and can sing all the songs, and it’s still fun to watch now that all of us who were kids when it first came out are old enough to know the actual history.
3. Home for the Holidays
Another
classic tale of a main character coming back home for the holidays and being reunited with their quirky family. Holly Hunter plays our main character here in one of the better versions of this story. Some of you may recognize this story from a few years ago from “The Family Stone”, a sinisterly similar storyline, except told in Christmas form. This is the winner of the two by a mile; it’s funny, sincere, and well acted by all.
4. Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
You can never go wrong with a healthy dose of Charlie Brown during the holidays. Join Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus and Lucy, and the rest of the gang in this yearly classic on Thursday at 8pm on ABC.
5. It’s a Wonderful Life
What would a Thanksgiving movie list be without a Christmas movie? Even though it’s a Christmas themed tale, it’s classically on after the Thanksgiving day parade. I actually saw it in its entirety only last Christmas, and it immediatly became one of my favorites. One for the whole family to watch together, but maybe with an intermission in the middle.

What about the 1952 film “Plymouth Adventure” with Spencer Tracy playing the Captain of the Mayflower? It was made way before my time, but I remember watching it as a kid, and it’s still on some channel sometime somewhere every Thanksgiving.
I know you said (in no particular order) but…
“It’s a Wondeful Life” should be listed first, it’s my favorite movie.
And you should add in “Christmas Vacation” no Christmas goes by without watching both.
I think the now-TBS-staple A Christmas Story probably deserved an honorable mention, too
All good suggestions! But don’t forget, this was a Thanksgiving movie list! I’ll take the last two comments into consideration for my Christmas one though, thanks for the feedback! : )
