Londonderry Deer Season Opens Today

Lot’s of activity in the police logs on cars parked along the side of the roadway, and shots fired throughout town.  Why not!  Londonderry is a great place to hunt with thousands of acres of open passive recreation land public and private with most of it not posted throughout town.

Muzzle loader season just wrapped up yesterday on November 10th, in Londonderry those hunters have been out since October 31st.  Youth had a special opportunity to get out and hunt on October 24th and 25th this year.  While we have no numbers for Londonderry, “This year’s preliminary state total was nearly the same as in 2008, when 341 deer were taken during the youth hunt.”, according to Kent Gustafson, the Deer Project Leader for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

The youth hunt is for hunters under 16 that have a licensed hunter with them over age 18.

Deer season in Londonderry is November 11th through December 6th for 2009

Whether you’re hunting, hiking or out for a stroll with the dog, put on an item of highly visible blaze orange clothing when you’re out enjoying the great outdoors this time of year. Be aware of hunting seasons and prepare to share the woods. To make sure you can be seen, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts should wear a fluorescent orange hat, vest or jacket. Consider decking the dog out with a colorful bandana.

To play it safe, put on the orange!

I went for a nice 3.5 mile hike this past Saturday in the Musquash (yes I did wear some orange). Unlike some Town Councilors from other towns, this Councilor did NOT freak out when he came across hunters with guns. I was glad to see them safely enjoying their sport. The first 2 were just leaving Hickory Hill with a good size doe in the back of their truck. On the way out, I ran into a few more just getting started. I chatted with them and wished them luck as they set off.

There was a little non-hunting activity going on. There was a man walking his dog (he conveniently tied orange ribbons on the animal to make it more visible). I also saw Bob Saur who took it upon himself to repair the damaged kiosk that some knucklehead took an axe to (thanks Bob!). I also ran into Mike from the Conservation Commission who was doing some trail maintenace (thanks to you also Mike!).

It was a good way to spend a few hours on a Saturday morning.

The work that Mike Considine and I were doing were left over projects from the recent Londonderry Trailways work days on Halloween weekend. We had eleven people in total helping to build three new bridges, improve signage, fix the kiosk, and finish clearing a new portion of trail connecting to the northern end of the Musquash. We even had a group of ~30 cub scouts help clear brush from the Overlook. (We’ll get a story submitted about these improvements.)

There are always projects, large and small, that need to be done to maintain and improve the trails in town. Many can be done individually when your schedule (and the weather) permit. Anyone interested in lending a hand can contact Trailways at: http://www.londonderrytrails.org

Oh, and Mr. Dimarco helped me move the wood for the kiosk repairs. Thanks Paul!
