Thursday, November 12 SLAID CLEAVES
Granted, there’s a whole lot of history and detail that could be shoehorned into that most minimal of bios to flesh out Cleaves’ story. But all that’s really called for, from time to time, is a footnote or two to bring folks up to speed on his latest batch of literate, sepia-toned Americana songcraft. This year’s bounty comes baring the foreboding title of Everything You Love Will be Taken Away, but fans of the Austin-based singer-songwriter needn’t fear: Everything you love about the man’s singular voice and music is still very much intact.
Friday, November 13 ENTRAIN
Epic in sound and kaleidoscopic in vision, the eclectic Martha’s Vineyard-based six-piece Entrain has been thrilling critics and fans alike since its inception. Entrain has recorded seven albums, all of which have been praised for their ability to shift effortlessly between musical styles – from rock, blues, calypso and ska, to zydeco, jazz and funk – often within the same song. “The whole Entrain concept is based around the drums and infectious rhythms. Once we’ve got that— anything goes, everything goes,” explains Tom Major ( drummer). As Sam Holmstock (conga/djembe/trombonist) says, “The most important thing that we try to do with our music is bring everybody together in the spirit of peace, love, fun and a ton of drums!”
Saturday, November 14 THE FOOLS
The Fools barged onto the Boston music scene with their first single “She Looks All Right in the Dark”. Known for their outrageous live performances the band quickly gathered a loyal and ever-growing audience. Their first national (and then international) hit record, “Psycho Chicken,” was a parody of Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer. With the signing of the band to EMI Records came the first two albums “Sold Out” and “Heavy Mental”. Touring North America first with The Knack and then with Van Halen helped to place the band firmly on the national stage. European tours, including shows with Cheap Trick and Journey, resulted in huge overseas record sales. Back home again The Fools released their biggest album, “World Dance Party”.
Sunday, November 15 JAKE SHIMABUKURO
Renowned for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques, Jake views the ukulele as an “untapped source of music with unlimited potential”. His virtuosity defies label or category. Playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and rock, Jake’s mission is to show everyone that the ukulele is capable of so much more than only the traditional Hawaiian music many associate it with.
His latest release, My Life (Hitchhike Records) is an EP that features six brand-new ukulele arrangements of Jake’s favorite tunes by Sarah McLachlan, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Cyndi Lauper, wrapped around the classic “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. On this heartfelt and beautiful recording, Jake respects the originals while integrating his own soulful, one-of-a-kind interpretations. This follows in the footsteps of Jake’s smash hit full-length CD Gently Weeps (2006), which has sold 100,000 copies worldwide.
November 18 ENGLISH BEAT
Formed in Birmingham (UK) in 1978, this much loved multi-racial sextet took the Specials’ blueprint and added high-spirited pop appeal, all spiced up with a ska authenticity provided by legendary bluebeat saxophonist Saxa. February 2003 saw a dream come true for many Beat fans as the band reunited for a minitour in the UK, which culminated in their acclaimed, sold out command performance at the Royal Festival Hall! It was a magical homecoming for the band and for the fans, with band members and fans gathering from around the globe for a night or irie, ska-ful rock-steady Beat! Being the hard driving ska legend that he is, however, Dave was not content to rest on his laurels after the RFH reunion. Dave continues to tour the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the UK with an amazing all-star ska backing band playing the hits of The Beat, General Public, and his new songs.!

November 30 AMBER RUBARTH and ADAM LEVY
NPR loves “her honesty and humor.” The Boston Globe says “You will leave with a crush on her.” She won 1st Place in the International Songwriting Contest (judged by Tom Waits) for her song “Washing Day,” co-written with Adam Levy. Over 1.6 Million MySpace listens, 5 Europe tours, and all unsigned. Welcome to the musical world of ambeR Rubarth.
Take the timelessness of Patsy Cline. Mix in the insatiable curiosity of Socrates. Give it an edge, a roughness, refined in the spirit but raw in the performance, like someone singing in the shower. You’ll start to have an idea of what makes up AMBER RUBARTH.
