If you are a fan of the Discovery Channel hit show “Storm Chasers” chances are you got to see Brendan and Stacy of the Londonderry High School First Robotics Team on National TV!
The commercial was set to the music of the old campfire song, “I Love the Mountains” we warn you if you play this it is going to stick in your head for the rest of the day!
The team was extremely excited to shoot the commercial with inventor Dean Kamen who can be seen threading his way around the PVC Pirate team working on their 2008 competition robot. At the end of the shoot, Dean signed the robot and joked, “Now I want to see this part on every robot you make in the future!”
“The World is Just Awesome speaks to the core of what Discovery Channel is all about. Just like the network; individuals like Kamen and Sunderland bring an unrelenting passion and curiosity to everything they do. The spots are visually broad and sweeping yet fun and personal in tone. With the addition of our on-air talent, we bring to it a real personality,” said Dan Bragg, vice president creative, at the Discovery Channel.
The Londonderry PVC Pirates are at 23 seconds in after “The World is Just Awesome” starts.
The original spot, “The World is Just Awesome,” premiered in March 2008 and went on to pick up several prestigious industry awards including a Promax, Clio, One Show, International Andy and an Art and Technique of the American Commercial (AICP) Award for musical arrangement.
Time will tell if this new version with our Londonderry High School stars rises to the award charts. For now we award it 4 seeds from Londonderry on the “EJ Lee movie rating system,” we hope she doesn’t mind!

You can also read some details of the day this footage was shot in our story “The PVC Priates with FIRST Founder Dean Kamen in an upcoming Discovery Channel Commercial” here in the Londonderry Hometown Online News.
Not only the world, “Londonderry is Just Awesome” too!

As with so many groups at LHS, the PVC Pirates raise money through fundraisers and donations to pay for participating in local and regional events. If you’d like to help these LHS students make Londonderry proud be sure to help them out when you see them out fundraising!
(posted as self-serving father of one of the Pirates!)
And adding onto Bob’s comment, we’re looking to raise over $40,000 dollars this year to get everyone to the Chesapeake Bay Regional in Baltimore (because our team doubled in size, our cost nearly doubled!). So please do not hesitate to email pr@team1058.com if you have any resources you think may help the team in achieving this endeavor.
Thanks for the post!
It is unfortunate that the Londonderry School system does not provide any funding for this program, not 1 penny. A high percentage of students in the robotic programs go on to a 4 year college in either the computer or engineering fields. These kids have to scrape every year just to get the money to purchase the parts for building the robots not to mention the funds needed to compete and represent the Londonderry Schools.
