The hottest morning most can remember in 30 years, course temperatures were about 72 degrees, but after a very humid night of 90% humidity only dropped to 78% at race start time. Calm winds brought no relief to the runners, last Saturday August 15th and at the end no shower from Londonderry Fire. The Aerial Ladder Truck has been in repair for about a month. The race records still stand with Dave Dunham in 1991 at 14:44 for the men and Maribell Sanchez in 2000 for the women.
Homegrown Londonderry racer Todd Swenson came in first with a time of 16:53 averaging 5:26.1 per mile. Crossing the finish line with ease, even glancing at his watch casually 18 seconds ahead of second place Mark Gosztyla.
Todd graduated in 1998 from Londonderry High School and was very active in the track program. Attending William and Mary College on a Scholarship program his life journey has led him to a career as a Technical Representative for Soucony Running Shoes and Apparel, a international company founded one year before Old Home Day, that just celebrated it’s 110th anniversary last year.
The son of Suzie and Kenny Swenson of Londonderry this apple did not fall far from the tree. Ken Swenson ran in College, and was on the US Army track team. Ken competed in the 1972 Olympics in Munich Germany in the Men’s 800 Meter race. The final race of this event was won by Dave Wottle coming from behind and wearing a hat, we put a video on in at the end of the story if you would like to remember with us.
Women’s division winner also of Londonderry 17 year old Briana Devereaux with a time of 20:21.5. Crossing with a strong finish and great attitude. Placing a respectable 19th overall in a field of 377 finishers.
A Londonderry icon, and Matthew Thornton Principal Carol Mack came in first place in her age group. As soon as she comes back to earth she has promised us an interview.
