With blue and white gowns filling the center of the Verizon center one color stood out more than another, a simple ribbon of orange. Graduating with her class Angela Fitzgerald made the number 401 students June 13th.
Angela has been battling leukemia struggling not only with the disease but with keeping up with her studies at Londonderry High School. Clearly moved by the show of support she waved and smiled as she walked across the stage with her classmates to receive her diploma. Londonderry High School is one of the largest if not the largest school supporting the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program. The program provides wigs for patients like Angela following treatments. Visit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society website for more information on this malignant disease of the bone marrow and blood.
Suzanne Laurent has produced a nice audio slideshow with graduation photos by Jarrod Thompson, and more senior photos from the school year by other staff, on the Derry News Website HERE.
Jason Parent gives his first graduation address as Principal of Londonderry High School
Good afternoon. My name is Jason Parent and I am the proud principal of Londonderry High School. We welcome and congratulate the families, friends, and teachers of the Graduating Class of 2009. You are the 30th graduating class from Londonderry High School and you are a special group of people that have all contributed to a school year we will never forget.
At Senior Supper, a few of you asked how my first year as principal went and what I really thought about the Class of 2009. I think my short answer to the question was that it was a very interesting year led by a very eclectic class. Now that I’ve caught my breath and have had a little more time to reflect, I hope to answer that question better this second time around.
At the start of your senior year, you were introduced to an administrative team at LHS, 1/3 of which were brand new to their positions (including me). You heard about some new things we were bringing in like X2 and NEASC Re-Accreditation. We challenged this senior class to show pride and leadership in your school, carry out the goals we have collectively set, and make your mark as the Class of 2009; and you didn’t disappoint.
We kicked off the year w/ new Mission Statement & Expectations, and we tried to get you and the student-body to know it. We even quizzed you at the door before we let you into the dance. When we asked, “What do you know about our Mission Statement?” we got answers like, “Absolutely Nothing”…or “I think they want me to be a good kid”. Some of you started to sing Fight Song, and I’m not sure why. So we lowered our criteria, and asked “do you know ANY words in the M.S.” One of you said, “The”. So I turned to Mr. Psaledas and said, can you help them out and he looked at me and replied, “I don’t know it.” Finally we asked, “To get into this dance, what are you going to do when you go into classes on Mon?
Someone said, “Shut off my cell phone, or at least stop texting…”
The answer was: “Read it.” It’s that big banner in the foyer & in every classroom that says who we are and what we’re about.
Then it dawned on me. You didn’t need to memorize the M.S. or know much about it. This senior class modeled its key concepts everyday, and in the process, you made history! Some highlights:
To read the rest of Mr. Parents speech read the rest of the story. You will also find the entire graduating class of 2009.
Responsible Citizenship: Your class led the effort to Go Green (one of our school goals), by adding recycling bins to every single classroom and main area of the building. The AP Environmental Science Class worked with the ACT Program to address an issue that affects all of us. We also reduce & reuse thanks to your efforts.
This senior class took an active role in what you, and NH as a State, plays in National Politics. I sat alongside some politically charged seniors in our AP Government Classes to watch the final National Presidential Debate. Two of our seniors even connected with the two nominees. One of them sang the National Anthem at a political rally for Sen. John McCain, and our Senior Class President met with now US President, Barack Obama. Seniors in our Marching Band & Color Guard were presented with a Proclamation from Gov. John Lynch and later represented NH in the Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C., again making history.
Your class seized Opportunities. You seniors put us back on the map athletically. I wasn’t so sure in Oct. when we were swept at Mack Plaque. But P.A. can keep that, especially since we captured the Field Hockey & Girls Lacrosse State Championship plaques. You were a Final Four finisher in Football, Girls Indoor Track, Boys Baseball and Girls Softball, and a Finalist in Boys Indoor Track. Individual pursuits were just as impressive with the State and NE Wrestling Champion, a State record holder in the 400 M, a Class L champion and runner-up in the pole vault, and a 4 X 4 Boys Championship Team. So many of you seniors also made All-State Teams in your sports; which was a proud symbol for all of L
Musically, you represent some of the best talent in America. The West Side Story was unbelievable, Headlining the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was unprecedented, and the Drumline Performance during the Celtics games was unforgettable.
Other highlights from the M.S. include Success in the local & global community. Your reputation in the business world was recognized in Business Week who named LHS one of “America’s Best High School’s”, as a Parent’s choice. That is due in part to you seniors. We had two seniors compete in the National DECA conference in Anaheim, CA, and some seniors took part in the National Robotics Competition in Atlanta, GA. Our Lancer Spirit senior editor won the Free Spirit Award and participated in a national conference in Washington, DC. And on the global scale, President Hu Jintao honored our Band and C.G. with a letter of commendation after the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.
When we talk about a Nurturing Environment, I think of this senior class, which is a giving and altruistic group. You helped assist twelve Londonderry families during the holidays creating Christmas baskets and helping St. Jude’s Food Pantry. Many of you were willing to cut at least eight inches of your hair to help cancer patients in the Beautiful Lengths donation. You donated money to Warm Homes and sent money oversees to help assist the impoverished. Your community recognized how special you are, and donated over $100,000 towards college scholarships to help you during these difficult economic times.
Academic Excellence; your class is outstanding! We have 41 seniors who finished with a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 or higher, representing 10 % of your graduating class. Six of you seniors scored in the top 50,000 of 1.5 million people who took the PSAT Exam, and one of you was a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship recipient. Your high school has a drop-out rate of 0.8% (the lowest of all Class L schools, and the 6th lowest in NH)!
What impresses me most about this class is your Good Character (another component of our M.S.) You all came together over the course of this year, especially towards the end. You were one of the classiest group of seniors I’ve seen attend a prom. And you celebrated together. Your prom court was awesome, and again reflected the diversity in your class. Senior supper was packed, and you were all so happy to be together and enjoy your final days at Londonderry High School.
I heard the Class Trip on the river was everything it should have been; an exciting day we’re you hung out with each other, cheered each other on, and appreciated what makes this class so special. Your energy at Baccalaureate was incredible, and I wish I could have been in two places at once to see the Championship lax game.
And now you are here, shining, together again, on one of the most significant events of your lives to this point. You are unified. You are all wearing an orange ribbon in support of a classmate who is a fighter, and who will triumph in the face of adversity the same way this class has, time and time again. You are one of the most resilient classes I’ve come across, and that will bode well for you in the future. I sincerely thank you for this year and all that you’ve made it. Lancer Nation is alive and strong because of all of you.
I would also like to thank your Class Advisors Mary Johnson and Crystal Rich for their help and support of your efforts these past four years. It has truly been an honor for me to be associated with such an amazing group of people. Congratulations to the Class of 2009. You really are a class I’ll never forget and I feel so fortunate and privileged to be your principal! Thank you all very much!
