New Bookings
October 20 HOWARD JONES
It was in 1983 that Howard Jones released his first single ‘New Song’ in the UK. The expectation was that it might sell a few thousand copies and introduce his fresh new music to an unsuspecting world. The reality was quite different. The single steadily climbed the UK chart to peak at No. 3.
The second single ‘What Is Love?’ reached No. 2 in the UK and the third, the enigmatic ‘Hide and Seek’, showed the spiritual side of Howard Jones’ writing. These were followed by his first album, ‘Human’s Lib’, which came straight in at No. 1 in the UK, eventually going platinum, taking the synthesiser and Howard Jones to a new plateau.
The second album ‘Dream Into Action’ was even more successful, spawning a series of hits including ‘Like To Get To Know You Well’, ‘Look Mama’, ‘Things Can Only Get Better’ and the classic ‘No One Is To Blame’, which reached No.1 in the U.S. singles chart and has since had over 3 million radio plays in USA. ‘Dream Into Action’ went platinum in the U.S. and lived in the top 20 album chart for the best part of a year, making Howard Jones one of the very few British artists to have comprehensively ‘broken’ America in the past 25 years.

May 6 OTTMAR LIEBERT and LUNA NEGRA
Grammy Nominated Ottmar Liebert has become one of the most successful instrumental artists of the past decade, thrilling audiences throughout the world and releasing a catalog of classic recordings. By 1989, he had founded the first incarnation of his band Luna Negra. Nouveau Flamenco began life as a self-produced local release called Marita: Shadows and Storms, copies of which local Indian artist Frank Howell distributed in his art galleries. When the record found its way to radio stations and began generating a buzz among programmers and an unprecedented response among listeners, Higher Octave Music picked it up and released a fully remastered version.

Run for the Apples, 2010 Results and Photos

With the temperature at 90 degrees and the humidity at 58% it was a hot start for the Mack’s Apples 5K race late yesterday.  After assembling down by the pond, runners walked to the start nearby the regular Mack’s U-Pick 2 stand.  Andy Mack Jr. watched on as 128 runners bolted off to run the sometimes rugged cross country course through the orchard.

Rounding the orchards in the North West corner of the farm it did not take long for the leaders to pass the kiosk for the Adams Pond Trail.  According to one of our photographers, Keith Tharp who raced to the woods just after the start to shoot some great pictures.  “The trail through the woods has narrow sections and exposed roots in spots.”  You can see his images on his Champion Photo website of runners in the woods and at other locations on the course.

This course is not for your average paved road race runner, the trails are clear from growth and groomed for the event but in a natural state.  At least the roots and ruts are bordered by Adams Pond bringing some late day relief with the cool air from the waters of Adams pond to the runners.

These top 20 results are brought to you by the Greater Derry Track Club, New England Timing and Cool Running.

Terrorists Continue to Target the United States

The attempted car bombing this spring, in New York City by Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized American citizen who was born and raised in Pakistan, reveals the susceptibility of this country to acts of terrorism.

Although the explosive devices planted in New York City did not work, this event serves to point out that New York City continues to be a target for terrorism.  Other cities could be potential targets for Taliban and al Qaida terrorists emanating from Middle East countries or by a minority of U.S. citizens with loyalties to these groups.

We have to carefully screen people trying to enter the U.S. from high threat countries.  We have to infiltrate agents into terrorist organizations outside and inside this country.  We should report individuals who threaten this country or profess loyalty to countries and organizations that espouse the destruction of the U.S.

We need to tighten up and enact laws that will allow us to document individuals who gain naturalized American citizenship by marrying U.S. citizens, and who might be threats to this country.  Particular attention should be paid to applicants from countries that house, support, train and promote terrorism.

Don Moskowitz is a well known prolific writer on subjects of the nation and the world that spark his interest. Retiring from the US Navy in 1967 as a Lieutenant, he often writes on military and political maters he is very active in the Londonderry American Legion. A long career in corporate management he retired after developing a successful business with multiple locations in southern New Hampshire.

He lives in Londonderry, New Hampshire with his wife Betty, they have three children and four grandchildren.

Local Youth Bake for Bella

If the air smells extra sweet in Londonderry, there’s a good reason! Five local fourth graders are baking up all sorts of delicious treats in preparation for their bake sale on Sunday, August 29 from 9 AM to 1 PM at Mack’s Apples in Londonderry.  Planned offerings include various cookies, brownies, whoopee pies, and many more items. The girls have also been busy making some homemade crafts to sell at the bake sale such as handmade bracelets, bookmarks, and magnets.
These five young fourth graders, none of which know Bella, planned this with little help from adults. All these girls heard Bella’s story, and were inspired to help out.  They have had planning meetings and have been in constant touch over the summer to make this a successful event for Bella.

This irresistible fundraiser is to raise money to support the Bella Tucker Fund. All proceeds from this event will be donated directly to the Bella Tucker Fund.

Stop by Mack’s this Sunday from 9 AM until 1 PM to buy some delicious homemade treats and help support Bella Tucker! And don’t forget to get your Passport to Local Farms stamped while you’re there! Go to Don’t Forget Your Passports this Weekend for more information.

RE/MAX Roars at Old Home Day

Rising above Matthew Thornton’s roof bright and early Saturday morning, the RE/MAX hot air balloon remains an icon at Londonderry’s Old Home Day. The balloon, though tethered to the ground, gives riders a chance to take in the Old Home Day celebrations from a different perspective. Its basket filled with all ages, the balloon has risen eleven of the thirteen years it has been part of the Town’s festivities.

Though the balloon has only been grounded two different years, once for rain and once for wind, it offers more than just a fun ride. Each time the balloon rises, RE/MAX raises money for great local organizations and non-profit groups. This year, about 40 people were brave enough to step inside the basket, raising $350.

RE/MAX will decide in September which organization to donate the money to. In the past, the company has donated to Dollars for Scholars, Warm Homes, Londonderry and Derry Soup Kitchens, the Katrina Fund, the Bella Tucker Fund, the Lancer Marching Band, and more. The hot air balloon fundraiser, along with the company’s annual spring yard sale, have raised over $35,000 for local organizations over the years.

“We have always received overwhelming support from people in the community in donating their unwanted items, helping at the yard sales and making cash donations,” said Arlene Hajjar. “We are truly blessed to live in a community such as ours.”

RE/MAX International was founded in 1973 by Dave & Gail Liniger. 37 years later, both Dave & Gail remain active as chairman & co-chairman in keeping RE/MAX in the forefront as the “real estate leader” and developing the tools that their agents need in this challenging market. The RE/MAX balloon became the official logo in 1978 and is now one of the most recognized corporate images in the world.

For more great shots of the RE/MAX hot air balloon rides, visit our darkroom. And remember, all pictures are available for purchase!
