The Greater Derry Track Club (GDTC) is proud to host the 19th Annual Boston Prep 16 Mile Road Race at 10:0 AM on Sunday, January 26, 2014. The race is one of New England’s most popular, and is considered a perfect Boston Marathon training event. The race course, considered “Moderately Challenging”, travels the scenic country roads of Derry and East Derry, NH. This year, Derry’s West Running Brook Middle School serves as the event’s home base.
In 2013, 556 runners, including 13 from Derry and Londonderry, finished the race under the blue skies of a cold and windy New England winter day. 26-year-old Scott McGrath of Andover, MA repeated his 2012 victory as the overall winner. McGrath averaged a 5:40 per mile pace over the 16 mile race length, completing the event in 1:30:38. 35-year-old Stephanie Reilly, who represented Ireland in the 2012 Olympic Games 3000 Meter Steeplechase, crushed the women’s course record with a time of 1:36:54. Reilly, from Northbridge, MA, was the first women to ever run a sub 1:40 in this race. Charlie Bemis was the first Derry runner, winning the men’s 50‐60 year old age group with a time of 1:44:10. Kelly Galan, the first Londonderry finisher, crossed the line at 2:02:37.
This year, the race is limited this year to 900 runners. The first 700 entrants receive a long sleeve technical shirt. The race features chip timing, four on‐course timing splits, mile markers every mile, and four on‐course water stops. Hot soup, Gatorade, and other great refreshments greet the runners as they cross the finish line.
Register online for $50; mail‐in registrations received before January 19 are $55, mail‐in applications after January 19 and race day registrations are $60. Don’t procrastinate though; the race has sold out in recent years. Proceeds from the race support the popular Greater Derry Track Club Kid’s Summer Fun Run Program.
