Londonderry’s Sweet Kiwi Frozen Yogurt appeals to the inner child in everyone by offering more than a dozen delicious soft frozen yogurt flavors and fifty toppings in a self-serve atmosphere. Owned and operated by Laura Calamari, Sweet Kiwi opened in Londonderry on June 20, 2013. Calamari also owns a second shop in Hudson.
Sweet Kiwi offers fourteen individual flavors in seven machines, as well as seven twisted flavors. Every two weeks, Calamari carefully selects new flavors and flavor pairs to introduce into the shop. Over the course of a week, all but five “staple” flavors are replaced; these are Cookies and Cream, Strawberry, Chocolate, Vanilla, and Salted Caramel.
“I put Salted Caramel in our Hudson shop as kind of a filler because I needed one more and I’ve never been able to take it out. It became a staple and when we opened the Londonderry shop, people came to expect it,” explained Calamari.
With access to nearly seventy flavors, Sweet Kiwi also offers seasonal flavors including Eggnog, Toasted Marshmallow, Pumpkin, and Gingerbread. However, Calamari explained that the flavors are available year round and there’s no limit to the times she can offer them.
In addition to the flavors of frozen yogurt, Sweet Kiwi offers an abundance of toppings. Twenty-size dry toppings range from chocolate covered pretzels and chocolate chips to peanuts and sprinkles. Cold toppings, offered in twenty-four varieties, include fruit, jellies, bobas, and cookie dough. An assortment of syrups are also available.
Sweet Kiwi also offers smoothies made to order. Customers select their frozen yogurt flavors, toppings, and ingredients and employees blend the smoothies to the customers’ liking.
Employees at Sweet Kiwi are well trained and ready to help, said Calamari. “Each one of the employees will ask if you need help. If they see a kid walk in and head straight for the machines, they usually know what they are doing. If an adult walks in with a lost look on their face, they’ll show them the cups, how the machines work, and offer samples. I really have some phenomenal employees.”
Calamari further explained that the employees are constantly working to keep the shop clean because “nobody want to sit at a sticky table. My requirements for hiring are that you say hello when people come in, goodbye when they leave, and wipe up the table as soon as someone gets up.”
Sweet Kiwi also works hard to raise money for local organizations and makes donations to many charities. Calamari said she will work with organizations to host fundraising nights, like the recent one with the Londonderry Wildcats. She also explained that there is a lack of need for a tip jar since everything is self-serve. Instead, she has a “Change for a Cure” jar and any money that is left in the jar will be donated to different charities monthly. In July, more than $1,200 was donated to the Wounded Warriors Project.
