Short and Sweet in Londonderry

This week I will try to keep things Short and Sweet, don’t bet against me, I think I really can. Here goes. The clock is ticking!

I have talked about many different churches and faiths through the weeks, but oddly enough I never touched on my family’s home parish which is Saint Mark’s Catholic Church, right here in town! We kind of found each other when we first moved back to Londonderry. Their priest Father Tom was retiring and a new priest Father Moe was starting. We thought that would be a good fit for us. A new family and a new priest too! Quickly we became involved in their weekly masses and children’s programs. Roberta Davis gave so much of her time to build the fantastic children’s liturgy’s and programs that still continue today. Another humble hero, Roberta did so much and asked nothing in return. As I always say, if you are looking for a spiritual home, visit St. Mark’s, try a Sunday Mass. You and your children will love it there. Did I mention the Donuts and coffee after the 10:00 mass each week?

Children at St. Mark's Nursery celebrate their graduation.

Something else you may not know about St. Mark’s is that they have a phenomenal nursery school. Preschool is the word I think many people are more familiar with, but it’s amazing. When we first moved back to NH, that was our first choice for a nursery school for our girls, but they were full. Meredith could not even get in! Their reputation has stood the test of time and if you have a little one about to start school, quickly check out St. Mark’s Nursery School! Space goes quickly, so don’t hesitate. I can’t say enough about the education, love, faith and fun your child will experience. Call today and find out how to hold your spot for the fall.

I had to stop typing this Friday morning because my friend Barbara invited me to attend the Bone Builders class at our Senior Center at 11:00 am. What a class! What a senior center! I always love walking through the doors and I promise, you will feel welcomed. You should stop by here too! You may not have realized this but our senior center is for people 55 and over and the membership fee for the year is only $10! They have all kinds of events happening every week. After the bone builders class there was a chorus group preparing for up-coming events.

Don’t be fooled that this is an easy class because it’s in a senior center! It was tough! My legs were shaking as I tried to keep up with the level of leg lifts that they had worked their way up to with Barbara’s instruction. We worked every muscle group and stretched properly to prevent injury. I can’t say enough about it, and I felt great after we were done. I predict this senior center will become known as one of the best in our state and perhaps in the country someday. Did you know they are celebrating their 10th Anniversary? Great people like Gladyse who started the senior center and Bonnie who runs the front desk and serves on the Elderly Affairs Committee, see to it that everyone feels welcomed and a part of this great place.

I’m sure this will sound nutty to many of you, but if your someone out there with a big bundle of money that could help with an expansion or better yet a new building for our senior center, step on up! We are also working on affordable senior housing that we should have here in Londonderry. One thing I know for sure, from all the people I have loved and lost is that you cannot take your riches with you. Make a donation, do something great and make a difference. You may even know a corporation that might be looking for a worthy project. Please keep our senior center in mind and stop by for a visit.
I know this will be hard to believe but I just decided, spur of the moment, to end right here. This week, somehow, I covered wonderful programs for our very young and young at heart.

Ps. Happy 4th of July

As this week unfolds for all of us, think about how meaningful the 4th of July really is and how great our country is! Celebrate but remember too. Make sure your family knows the real meaning of the 4th of July. it is to commemorate the adoption of the declaration of Independence which was signed on July 4th 1776. Make sure your children know what we are celebrating and why. One of our favorite family movies will always be Disney’s National Treasure with Nicolas Cage. If you haven’t seen it, now is the perfect time. We watch it every year usually more than once! If you are looking for a musical don’t forget about 1776, it’s an older movie and harder to find, but worth the hunt too! Don’t let our history be forgotten, Remember<3

With A Grateful Heart Sherry

The amazing thing about being part of Visit Londonderry is that I never know exactly where a week will lead. Even though I have lived here since the 60′s, grew up at Kendalwood Condos, taught at the High School, and raised my family here, each day I learn something special about our community. One thing is for sure, Londonderry is the best place to Live, Work and Play! Each week I will share with you some of the amazing businesses and things I have learned about Londonderry.
