Filing a FAFSA by March 1 Is One Way For Students To Increase Financial Aid Options

Manchester, NH—For some people, filing taxes may not be the only deadline on the top of their mind these days. With the rising costs of college, you can bet for most parents and students the deadline their looking to meet or beat over the next few weeks is the FAFSA.

The FAFSA–or Free Application for Federal Student Aid –form is the universal form used to determine financial aid eligibility at most colleges. The deadlines vary, but typically are between mid-February and mid-March. For the University of New Hampshire, the priority deadline is this Friday, March 1.

“There are lots of resources for college, but you need to start by filling out the FAFSA,” says Jodi Abad, Associate Director of Financial Aid for UNH Manchester. “Meeting the priority deadline is very important because oftentimes students who miss the deadline miss out on financial aid opportunities.”

Meeting the FAFSA deadline is important not only for federal aid, but for institutional aid as well. “Even if you don’t know where you are going to school right now,” Abad says. “You should still file the FAFSA form because the filing date is on record for any school you may apply to later.”

The good news is that students still have time to apply for aid at UNH Manchester. This year, school officials increased institutional scholarship funding for qualified students. Scholarships range from $1,000 – $5,000 per year for New Hampshire residents, and many scholarships are renewable each year. The newest scholarship for incoming freshmen with a 3.0 GPA or better and strong extracurricular activity is the 21st Century Scholarship.

“The 21st Century Scholarship is renewable for up to eight semesters. This would provide a total of $12,000 over the course of a student’s four-year degree program, or $3,000 per year for a student,” says Abad.

UNH Manchester is an affordable choice for prospective students and that value doesn’t come at the cost of programming options. The school’s offerings are robust with 18 majors, 16 minors, innovative research and community learning opportunities, flexible course scheduling and a brand new Emerging Technology Center.
