In 1985 Dr. John J. Ahern and Dr. Sean Nichols purchased a small dental business in Derry and, over the past several years, have built a family practice that prides itself on being a patient centered, active, integral part of the community. Partners and staff have been added through the years, but the company remains focused on its founding values.
Dr. John J. Ahern, a graduate of The College of The Holy Cross, and Dr. Sean Nichols, a graduate of Providence College, met at Georgetown University where they completed their Dental Degrees. They co-owned the practice at 30 Pinkerton Street in Derry for 3 and a half years before Dr. John P. Ahern, a graduate of St. Anselm College and Georgetown, joined them. Four years later, Dr. Donald Hersey joined the group after relocating from Connecticut. Dr. Hersey is also a St. Anselm College and Georgetown University graduate.
For more than fifteen years, the dentists have worked side by side to create strong relationships with their patients and each other. In 2008, the firm hired Dr. Stephen Butterfield, a Derry native and St. Anselm College graduate and a University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine Graduate. He became full partner in 2012.
“Our primary mission is to deliver patient-centered state-of-the-art dentistry. Advancement in technology has truly been the greatest change over the past twenty-eight years. Whether it is the chair side computers, digital radiography, cad-cam imaging systems or microscopes and lasers, all work to enhance patient care. The practice is committed to continuing education and applying the best practices and appropriate standards of care.”
As members of the community, the dentists work closely with local organizations and schools. This includes guest speaking at schools and working with Londonderry High School, Pinkerton Academy and St. Anselm College to offer internships. In 1991, the dentists also helped create Northeast Mobile Dental Services, a program that brings dentistry into nursing homes.
Working together with the Children’s Dental Network (CDN) and a group of dental professionals, the doctors screen children in Grades one through five in the towns of Londonderry, Derry, Windham, Chester, Sandown and Hampstead. The school nurses’ offices are converted into a dental setting to provide the exams. The visiting dentists evaluate, diagnose and make treatment recommendations. The CDN hygienists deliver treatment.
Continuing their mission to help the community, Ahern, Nichols, Ahern, Hersey and Butterfield also work closely with Community Health Services (CHS). The CHS Agency screens patients for eligibility and refers patients to the practice, where they receive dental treatment at a reduced financial cost.
“We take great pride in our practice and the relationships we build with our patients. We are members of the community personally and professionally, so we truly identify with the Greater Londonderry/Derry population.”
