Londonderry is hosting its annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. On November 17, 2011, residents and locals can drop off unwanted and unused chemicals that would otherwise be thrown in the regular trash. Located on the LAFA fields, directly behind Londonderry Central Fire Station on Mammoth Road, the event will run from 9 AM until noon.

The collection day is funded by the New Hampshire Household Hazardous Waste Program. This program funds collection events year round and statewide and was put into place to raise awareness of the hazards certain chemicals may cause.

According to the EPA, Americans generate about 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste per year. The average home can accumulate as much as 100 pounds of hazardous waste in basements, garages and closets. When placed in the regular garbage, the chemicals can interact and cause toxic gases, poisonings and even fires. If the chemicals make it to the landfill without reacting, the possibility of water and air pollution is still a great risk.

The New Hampshire Household Hazardous Waste Program encourages all residents to take advantage of this disposal opportunity. They also encourage consumers to choose safer, non-toxic alternative products.

Items that WILL NOT be accepted are batteries, latex paints, explosives, radioactive and infectious chemicals, ammunition, fluorescent bulbs, used oil, and asbestos.
