The Saint Jude Parish Community Service Committee is excited to announce the first ever Triple Play Event to be held this Friday August 24, 2012. Featuring a blood drive, bone marrow typing, and backpacks for kids, the event will take place from 1 to 6 PM in the Parish Hall at 435 Mammoth Road in Londonderry.
Generally, the Parish hosts three blood drives throughout the year. However, due to the unusually great demand for blood products, and thanks to the new air conditioning unit recently installed, the Parish will host their first summer blood drive. The American Red Cross is in a critical state now with an urgent need for donors of all blood types.
As in usual fashion, the drive will feature the delicious treats other drives are known for, along with some new ones just for this drive. Appointments are greatly encouraged and can be made by calling the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS.
The Be The Match Bone Marrow Typing Drive will recruit new potential bone marrow donors to give patients in need their best hope for a cure. Donors have the potential to be the “one in a million” chance to provide a lifesaving bone marrow transplant.
This drive will help benefit Londonderry resident Gerry Shuck, who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in December of 2008. After undergoing treatment, the results were not what were hoped for and the cancer remains. Along with Shuck, there are many New Hampshire residents that have been looking for marrow donors.
Typing is simple and includes some paper work and a cheek swab. Once typed, donors stay in the database for as long as possible. For more information on the Bone Marrow Typing Drive, please call Jennifer St. Peter at the Rhode Island Blood Center at (800) 283-8385 ext. 762 or e-mail her at jstpeter(at)ribc.org.
During the event, the Parish will serve as a collection location for the Back 2 Basics Program. Erin McKenney, a member of the Parish, and her Girl Scout troop mate, Hannah Dowers, are sponsoring the collection of backpacks and school supplies for children in need. While these wonderful young women have been collecting supplies for some time now, they are in need of much more.
Supplies needed include:
- Backpacks (not rolling)
- 3-ring binders
- Colored pencils
- Solar-scientific calculators
- Loose leaf paper
- Glue sticks
- Composition books
- Index cards
- Book covers
- Pencil sharpeners
- Pencil pouches
Please consider bringing supplies to the Parish hall. To learn more about the Back2Basics collection, email Erin and Hanna at back2basics.schoolsupplydrive(at)gmail.com or find them on Facebook.
