The rain held off for week 6 of the Kid’s Summer Fun Runs, and the evening’s overcast skies and 77 degree temperatures were perfect for running. The participants ran hard and earned their reward of 12 juicy and healthy watermelons. Another 73 more children signed up for the evening, bringing the total to 852 participants over the past 6 weeks. The participants continued to bring in more food for St. Thomas’s food pantry in Derry. This week’s food total of 375 pounds brings the summer’s total up to 1931 pounds. A banner week next week will break the old record of 2,127 pounds of food donated. Please note that next Tuesday, August 7, will be the last event of the series. All runners in attendance will receive an award for their participation.

Presented by MVP Health Care; with financial support also provided by Northeast Delta Dental and Derry Medical Center, the series is in its 37th year. GDTC members lead the kids in stretching exercises and provide running tips. The 2-3 year olds run 50 meters, 4-6 year olds run 200 meters, 7-8 year olds run 300 meters, 9-10 year olds run 600 meters, and the 11-13 year olds run the cross country mile. 14 year olds and up run the open mile on the track, which often sees parents challenging the local high school elite runners.
GDTC supplies entrants with water, Gatorade, and watermelon. Runners receive weekly participation ribbons, which are supplied by the Derry Recreation Department. Runners completing the series receive medals and T-shirts from GDTC.
Future Dates: August 7. Location: Londonderry High School Track, Londonderry, New Hampshire. Registration 6:00pm, races start at 6:30pm. Check www.gdtc.org for weather updates. Registration is free, but please bring a nonperishable food item to restock food pantries in the greater Derry area.
