A Londonderry woman died this past Saturday, July 28, 2012, after her vehicle was struck by another while travelling on Route 121 in Hampstead, New Hampshire. Althea Hicks, 42, was transported to Parkland Medical Center following the accident, where she was pronounced dead.
According to Hampstead Police Lieutenant John Frazier, Hicks was travelling southbound on Route 121 in a 2005 Nissan Exterra at 6:50 PM when she approached the intersection of Emerson Avenue. A 2011 Hyundai operated by Carlos Herrera, 30 of Clinton, Massachusetts, was travelling westbound on Emerson Ave, approaching the intersection of Route 121.
Herrera pulled out onto Route 121 from the stop sign, attempting to make a left hand turn. He struck Hicks’ vehicle, causing it to flip onto its roof. She was partially ejected from the vehicle, as she was not wearing a seat belt, and was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Hicks’ passenger, Jay Nixon, 51, of Hampstead, suffered minor injuries and was later treated at Parkland Medical Center. Herrera’s passengers, Jillian Gould, 29; Melana Hewitt, 4; and Eleanor Cormier, 84, all of Fitchburg, MA, were transported to Parkland with unknown non-life-threatening injuries.
The accident is under investigation by the Hampstead Police Department. Assistance at the scene was provided by members of the Derry Police Technical Accident Reconstruction team.
Reports indicate that Carlos Herrera was arraigned in March 2012 for multiple charges brought against him from the Bolton MA Police Department. These include operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration, uninsured motor vehicle, unregistered motor vehicle, no inspection sticker, improper operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to wear a seat belt.
