Red Listed Bridge to be Demolished in Londonderry

Demolition crews will work overnight beginning Monday, February 6, 2012, to remove the out of service bridge over Route 28 at Exit 5 on Interstate 93 as part of the ongoing widening of the major highway. The bridge work will take place during non-commuter hours, approximately between the hours of 9 PM and 3 AM, on the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th.

Removal of the bridge will require those traveling on Route 28 north and south to be intermittently detoured onto I-93. Traffic exiting I-93 North onto Route 28 North and exiting I-93 South to Route 28 South will be detoured to reverse direction at the next I-93 exit. Minor traffic delays can also be expected.

The night work will begin Monday, February 6, 2012 around 9 PM. It is expected to last until 3 AM early Tuesday morning. It will resume Tuesday evening around 9 PM, and end again around 3 AM Wednesday morning. Crews will again resume work around 9 PM Wednesday, February 8th, 2011, and end around 3 AM Thursday morning. All work will be done weather permitting.

Other expected changes in the area of Exit 5 is the expansion of Route 28 from the current two travel and two turning lanes to six lanes of traffic, both travel and turning. The bridges will also allow the lanes to be increased to eight lanes if needed in the future. Also, a new light will be placed at the intersection of Route 28 and Liberty Drive.

The project begins near the weigh station between Exits 3 and 4 and ends at the 293 split in Manchester. The area of Exit 5 has been worked on for nearly a year now and will be expected to be completed in June of 2014.
