The actions of Londonderry Town Council at the January 12th budget hearing was an absolute disgrace. At 12:30AM, in the dead of night when few people were watching, they cut the library budget by $100,000. Upon seeing that many citizens had made the effort to brave the poor driving conditions to support the library they made article 4, the general operating budget for the town which includes the library, the last item on the agenda. The Council took up article 4 at approx. 11:30 and did not allow public comment no earlier than midnight. This had the effect of silencing many citizens who wanted to voice their support for the library. People have responsibilities and can’t spend the entire night at town hall. This article should have at least been taken up in the previously announced order (i.e. 4th). The Council clearly did not want to hear dissenting opinions on this matter and did everything in their power to stifle debate. Citizens have the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances (1st amendment to the US Constitution) and the council made every effort to deny citizens this right when it came to supporting their library.
One must wonder if Chairman O’Keefe purposely let the debate about the cable station endlessly drone on and on so as to extend the evening out and increase the likelihood library supporters would leave.
To add insult to injury, Chairman O’Keefe was quite rude to one of the speakers who spoke in favor of the library, Ms. Sally Nelson, who is a well respected individual in the community and has served the people of Londonderry for the last 20 years at Leach Library. Chairman O’Keefe owes Ms. Nelson an apology for his rudeness.
The library is an essential resource to this community and I urge citizens to attend the upcoming deliberative session and restore the funds the Council has cut. The library serves the entire community in a way no other portion of the town government does. More people walk through the library in a day than enter the town hall in at least a week!
What is the first educational institution a young child encounters? The library.
What single institution is doing more to close the “digital divide” in this society more than anyone else? The library.
What local institution does more to help job seekers than anyone else? The library.
What institution encourages lifelong learning? The library.
An informed citizenry is the life blood of our democracy and the library helps to make that happen on a daily basis.
Again, please support your library in its time of need. Support your library at the Deliberative Session on February 6th!
If you are so unhappy with the conduct of Chairman O’Keefe then exercise you right to vote. He is running for reelection show up and vote him out of office.
