January 12 LAURENCE JUBER
Laurence Juber is a two-time Grammy award-winning fingerstyle acoustic guitarist, also known for his electric work as lead guitarist in Paul McCartney’s Wings. Juber has released 15 critically acclaimed solo albums which feature his celebrated arrangements of popular tunes and genre-crossing compositions. In fall 2010, he released the highly anticipated “LJ Plays the Beatles Vol. 2.” He was voted “Guitarist of the Year” by the readers of Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine and named one of the top acoustic guitar players of all time by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. A dynamic, entertaining performer and an accomplished clinician, LJ brings his passion for the guitar to venues around the world, creating a multifaceted performance that belies the use of only one instrument.
January 13 GANDALF MURPHY and THE SLAMBOVIAN CIRCUS OF DREAMS
The music of Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams has been variously described as “hillbilly-Floyd,” “folk-pop,” “alt-country, roots-rock,” and “surreal Americana;” a clear indicator of its singularly indescribable uniqueness. Dancing freely between all existing religious and philosophical mythologies, the music is uplifting, empowering, and a lot of fun.
January 14 PETER YARROW
“We’re part of a long train ride,” is the way Peter Yarrow visualizes the many events that have highlighted a career spanning more than four decades. With characteristic care, Yarrow places the success he’s had within a greater context, seeing his accomplishments as part of a tradition, to be credited and carried on. “When I was in high school,” he recalls, “I heard The Weavers’ concert at Carnegie Hall where they sang songs such as ‘If I Had a Hammer,’ and ‘Wasn’t That a Time.’ It was inspiring, and it showed me the extraordinary effect that music of conscience can have.” That lesson launched Peter on a lifelong path that is now, perhaps, in its most vital phase.
Over the years, many issues have moved Peter to commit his time and talent: equal rights, peace, the environment, gender equality, homelessness, hospice care and education. All have utilized his skills as both a performer and an organizer. Along with his singing partners, Paul and Mary, Peter participated in the Civil Rights Movement, which brought them to Washington in 1963 to sing for the historic march led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as the equally historic Selma-Montgomery march in 1965. He went on to produce and coordinate numerous events for the Peace/anti-Vietnam War movement, including festivals at Madison Square Garden and Shea Stadium. These efforts culminated in his co-organizing the 1969 Celebration of Life, a now-famous march on Washington, in which some half-million people participated.
January 15 POCO
After rising in 1968 from the ashes of the Buffalo Springfield, Poco began infusing the L.A. folk/rock sound with their deep-rooted lyricism and the instrumentation of country music, a revelation and inspiration for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, and other future headliners. Legend, released late in 1978, became the best-selling LP in their history, earning a gold record in the course of rising to number 14. The accompanying single, the ethereal “Crazy Love” became their biggest hit ever, reaching number 17 on the pop charts (and number one as an adult contemporary hit).
New Bookings
February 11 LIZ FRAME and THE KICKERS
Liz Frame wrote her first song at age nine, and has been performing her own brand of rootsy Americana music since her early teens. She spent her childhood listening to the artists her parents loved – Jimmie Rogers, The Weavers, B.B. King, Elvis Presley – to name just a few, absorbing their sounds and ultimately allowing them to influence her own. At fourteen she picked up the guitar and has been hooked on the process of making music ever since.
In the early 80’s and into the 90’s, she began seriously pursuing a career in music, becoming an active member of the country music/rockabilly scene in Boston. Fronting her own band, she garnered serious interest from both major and independent record labels during this time, but ultimately decided against the rigors of the business to concentrate on family. Now that her daughter is grown, she is once again free to pursue what she loves most – making infectious, heart-felt and at times raucous music that appeals to everyone from eight to eighty!
Today Ms. Frame is backed live by her band, the Kickers, a group of talented friends whose raw, acoustic sound and sweet harmonies help to deliver Ms. Frame’s material with distinction. They play regularly around Boston, northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire, and are fast becoming a favorite of the area. A prodigious writer, Ms. Frame has just released her first full-length recording, “Sooner,” a collection of ten original songs that feature playing by some of the cream of the crop session players, including Bobby Keyes, Duke Levine and Kevin Barry.
February 17 JOHN WAITE
In 1984 John found himself at number one on the hit parade with “Missing You.” The song topped the international charts. Twenty years on, this classic remains a radio staple around the globe. In the late 1980s, Waite released more solo albums before returning to the top of the charts during a two-album tenure as front man for the pop/rock super group Bad English.
Waite now prefers to balance his life between singing on stage and composing and recording honest, heartfelt solo albums. Not one to be deterred by the changing face of the music industry, John Waite is content in simply being true to himself and his art.
March 23 SHELBY LYNNE
Her talent is as versatile as the accolades she has earned. She is a Grammy Award winning artist, writer, and accomplished actress. Performances such as her role as Carrie Cash in the blockbuster motion picture “Walk The Line” exemplify one overall theme for those who follow her career; taking a genuine approach to doing what she loves best, and following her heart.
May 18 THE GLENGARRY BHOYS
Described as bold, unorthodox, vibrant, and evocative, the “GLENGARRY BHOYS” hybrid of Canadian Highland Scots and French Canadian musical idioms has evolved into a sound that is weighty, authoritative, and extremely entertaining. Their energy and good humor, as much a part of the show as their musicianship, crosses all cultures and ages. From a small Scots-French-Canadian enclave in Eastern Ontario, these Celtic-Stompers, always pushing the musical envelope but never straying too far from the traditional whence they came, have earned a reputation as entertainers that challenge you to sit still during their engaging performances.
