Annual 16-Miler to be Held in Derry

The Greater Derry Track Club (GDTC) is proud to host the 16th Annual Boston Prep 16 Mile Road Race at 10 AM on Sunday, January 22, 2012. The race is one of New England’s most popular, and is considered a perfect Boston Marathon training event. The race course, considered “Moderately Challenging”, travels the scenic country roads of Derry and East Derry, NH. This year, the Derry West Running Brook Middle School serves as the event’s home base.

In 2011, 657 runners, including eight from Derry and Londonderry, finished the race on a clear and cold New England winter day. Patrick Moulton of Providence RI, repeated his 2010 win with another victory. Moulton averaged a 5:32 per mile pace over 16 miles, completing the event in 1:28:31. Raelyn Crowell-Coates, from Amherst NH, was the top female runner. Crowell-Coates averaged 6:43 per mile for the 16 miles, finishing in 1:47:25.

The Run for the Apples is one of the five events hosted by the Greater Derry Track Club.

This year, the race is limited this year to 900 runners. All entrants receive a long sleeve technical shirt. The race features chip timing, four on-course timing splits, mile markers every mile, and four on-course water stops. T-Bones hot soup, Powerade, and other great refreshments greet the runners as they cross the finish line.

Register online here for $45; mail-in registrations received before January 15 are $50, mail-in applications after January 15 and race day registrations are $55. Don’t procrastinate though; the race has sold out in recent years. Proceeds from the race combined with the generous sponsorship of MVP Healthcare, Walmart, and Enterprise Bank directly support the popular Greater Derry Track Club Kid’s Summer Fun Run Program.

The Boston Prep 16 M is one of the 4 events annually hosted by the GDTC. The other events are Kid’s Summer Fun Run Series, (6 weeks June-July), Mack’s Apples Cross Country 5K (August), and Turkey Trot 5K (Thanksgiving morning). The Greater Derry Track Club is a non-profit charitable organization formed in 1978 devoted to promote running related activities and improvements in our community.
