The 135th annual Deerfield Fair began today, September 29, 2011 and will last through Sunday, October 2, 2011. The fair hosts a number of events, from tractor pulls for the farmer-at-heart, to amusement park rides for the kid-at-heart. From fried dough and loaded sausages, to pig scrambles and demolition derbies, the Deerfield Fair attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Gates opened at 8 AM this morning, with the opening ceremony kicking off four days of fun at 9 AM. Events today include the Giant Pumpkin and Squash Weigh-Off, the Tom Dixon Band performing throughout the day, a Woodsman’s Contest, and much more. Other events throughout the weekend include horse and cattle pulls, the Miss Deerfield Fair Pageant, dog demonstrations, swine judging and much more.
Special performances during the weekend can be expected by the Granite State Cloggers, BJ Hickman Master Magician, 13 year old singer Emma Gelinas, Dan Grady’s Marvelous Marionettes, Vic and Sticks Recycled Rhythm Band, and more. These performances can be seen at various stages throughout the fairgrounds, including the Relaxation Grove Stage, the Show Stage and Circus Stage, and the Bandstand.
Other fun activities at the fair include amusement park rides and a chance to see many different kinds of animals like sheep, cows, chickens, ducks, pigs, horses, and more. Children can even pet some of the animals and watch as cows are milked.
Admission into the fair is $10 per adult, with children 12 and under free. Seniors 65 and older are only $7 on Thursday and Friday. Gates are open from 8 AM until 10 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and from 8 AM to 7 PM on Sunday.
All fair-sponsored events, like the shows and contests, are included in the price of admission. The amusement rides do require the purchase of tickets, but special deals are offered. Patrons, on Friday and Sunday only, can purchase wristbands for only $20 and can ride all amusement rides between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM. Parking for the fair is free!
