Londonderry Committee Plans White Trail Hike

Fall is here and the weather is grand! No bugs, no mud, no snow, just some great new trails to explore. Right here in our own backyard. The Musquash is home to over 15 miles of hiking trails.

This map shows the location of the White Trail. Click the map for a larger image.

The new White Trail opens the northern portion of the Musquash Conservation Area to hiking, biking and cross country skiing.  The trail can be accessed directly from the Faucher Road trailhead or it can be reached from the most northern portion of the Blue Trail (also known as Old Alexander Road).  The White Trail intersects the Blue Trail at two different locations (east and west) and thus it can also be used as a loop trail.  The White Trail adds approximately 1.5 miles to the existing trail system.

The northern section of the Musquash Conservation Area is distinctly different from the portions of the Musquash accessed from the Hickory Hill and Sarah Beth trailheads.  The northern section of the Musquash consists of gently rolling hills with very few wet areas.  The White Trail rolls along with the topography: climbing hills, traversing a ravine and crossing a stream.  The White Trail is quickly becoming a favorite of the Musquash regulars.

On Saturday October 1 at 9:00 AM the Londonderry Conservation Commission will be sponsoring a hike on the new White Trail. We will meet at the Faucher Road trailhead and depart at 9:00 AM SHARP for what will be about a three hour hike. We will take in the terrain and explore over 3 miles of trails. Bring a snack, water and a sturdy pair of footwear. Dress appropriately for the weather. Heavy rain will cancel the hike. Contact us for more information.

From out of town or new to the Musquash, these are directions to the trailhead.

Londonderry Landmarks Silhouette

Here’s another edition of Londonderry Landmarks! Last week’s landmark remains a mystery, as no one has yet to guess the correct answer. Readers were shown an image of what looks like the side of a house with a letter on it. A few guesses came in, but no one was correct. We gave a hint in the comments section, so “hop” on over there, read the comments and see if you can get a “hare” closer to bringing “home” the answer! Click here to see last week’s Landmark.

If you can’t get last week’s, take a look at this week’s landmark. Let us know if you think you know what it is and where it can be found. Remember, we want exact item and location! Leave a comment on the story if you think you know what it is. If you have an idea for a future Londonderry Landmark, leave a comment and Jacklynn will get back to you via email!

Visit Londonderry, Just Don’t Steal Our Apples!

With four orchards across town and 360 acres of trees for picking, many from across the region have come to Londonderry to pick apples during the past few weeks. Not all have paid for their pickings, however.

This past weekend, Londonderry Police caught what appears to be two different groups stealing apples straight from the trees on two different orchards. The first incident, which took place this past Sunday, September 25, 2011 at about 3:40 PM, occurred at Sunnycrest Farm on High Range Road.

Police received a call from a manager at Sunnycrest reporting a group of people in a purple caravan stealing “a bunch of apples”. The van was reportedly in the parking lot of the orchard getting ready to leave. Police responded quickly, but the van reportedly left before police arrived. They also reportedly left one of their own behind.

When police arrived, an unidentified woman that had been with the group reportedly paid for the apples that were taken from the orchard. The other subjects later returned to pick up the woman, were spoken to by police and were issued no trespass orders.

Also on September 25, at about 9:34 PM, a Londonderry Police officer spotted a blue minivan in the orchards across from Moose Hill. After requesting backup, the officer approached the vehicle. The officer discovered one woman near the car and there was reportedly another subject in the orchard still picking apples. It appeared the pair were filling “a bunch of boxes” and had already reportedly loaded about three bushels of apples into the van.

Two more officers arrived to assist and were able to find the subject still in the orchards. The emergency contact for Mack’s Apples was contacted and told police to press charges against the two subjects. Mei Fang Chen, age 43 of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with Theft; All Other. Her accomplice, Jian Hua Liu, age 38 of Boston, Massachusetts, was also arrested and charged with Theft; All Other. Both were released on personal recognizance bail, but no court date information was provided.

This Week
September 29 THE JON HERINGTON BAND
Jon Herington is the veteran touring and recording guitarist for Steely Dan, a position he continues to hold after 11 years.
The Jon Herington Band is currently the hard-hitting, stripped-down guitar, bass, drums power trio version of the band which is specifically designed for the club and theatre concert scene, with a blues/rock/pop vibe and an emphasis on the songs and the guitar playing. There is plenty of killer guitar for fans of Jon’s playing, and the lyrics are often funny in addition to being clever and compelling. Great support is supplied by a no-nonsense, take-care-of-business band featuring Dennis Espantman on bass and Frank Pagano on drums. All three band members sing, providing a much bigger sound than a typical trio.

September 30 DIRK HAMILTON
Legendary rock/folk songwriter Dirk Hamilton’s first record on ABC “You Can Sing on the Left or Bark on the Right “was produced by Gary Katz of Steely Dan fame and his “Meet Me at the Crux” on Elektra Records is considered by many to have pointed the way for Seattle’s “Grunge Movement” and was listed in Rolling Stone as “One of the overlooked gems of the seventies”. A long time cult favorite, Dirk Hamilton has released 15 albums in Europe and the United States.
The New York Press called him “The original Anti-folkie— always one of the few true poets on the scene.” The L.A. Times called him “One of rock’s best kept secrets— a gripping live performer” and The Austin Chronicle; “Lucid, intelligent and distinctive songs, with a throaty howl that resembles Van Morrison and John Hiatt; he’s also an emotive, evocative singer and a winning presence on stage.”

October 1 THE FOOLS
The Fools barged onto the Boston music scene with their first single “She Looks All Right in the Dark”. Known for their outrageous live performances the band quickly gathered a loyal and ever-growing audience. Their first national (and then international) hit record, “Psycho Chicken,” was a parody of Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer. With the signing of the band to EMI Records came the first two albums “Sold Out” and “Heavy Mental”. Touring North America first with The Knack and then with Van Halen helped to place the band firmly on the national stage. European tours, including shows with Cheap Trick and Journey, resulted in huge overseas record sales. Back home again The Fools released their biggest album, “World Dance Party”.
Do not miss catching the legendary Fools live. The mix of great music performed by uniquely talented musicians with a hefty helping of comedy comes together in an unmatched charm that has been lighting up millions of smiles over the years. And it all keeps getting better with time. Experience The Fools and smile for yourself.
