Londonderry will be celebrating its 112th annual Old Home Day Celebration this week. The five day event runs from Wednesday, August 17 through Sunday, August 21 and boasts a great hometown, family oriented atmosphere. Activities include band concerts, Kidz Night, fireworks, children’s games, a baby contest, a 5K road race, a parade and so much more. More than 15,000 people attend Londonderry’s Old Home Day each year.
The first celebration was held in 1899 by Governor Frank Rollins. The concept was easy, fix the decline of the small farming town by welcoming back former residents, families and friends to make new acquaintances and renew old ones. Londonderry is now one of less than a dozen communities that has faithfully celebrated Old Home Day on the third weekend of August since 1899.
These gift baskets were the winners' prizes during the 2009 Baby Contest at Old Home Day.
This year, many tickets, coupons and gift baskets and certificates have been donated as prizes for the Baby Contest, BINGO and Londonderry Sings competitions. Winners of these competitions can walk away with tickets for box seats to a Fisher Cats game, a signed Red Sox baseball, free admission to Canobie Lake Park, climbing lessons at Vertical Dreams, free bowling and much more. Overall, the items that have been donated to the Old Home Day Celebration are valued at more than $4,700.
