New Hampshire State Fire Marshal J. William Degnan, Londonderry Fire Chief Kevin MacCaffrie, and Londonderry Police Chief William Hart announced that the investigation of the April 13, 2011 fire at 38 Hemlock Street, Londonderry, N.H. is continuing.
The investigative team, including Londonderry Police and Fire Department personnel, and the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office, operated at the scene for most of the day, on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, conducting interviews, recovering victims, and examining the fire scene.
The investigation revealed no evidence of any criminal intent, and investigators were able to rule out natural fire causes, such as weather conditions.
The two victims have been identified by the New Hampshire State Medical Examiner’s Office as Fran Gehling, age 64 and Rebecca Gehling, age 23. Both victims were occupants of the residence destroyed in the multiple-alarm fire.
While meeting with police and fire officials at the scene, New Hampshire State Fire Marshal J. William Degnan noted that the residence had working smoke detectors, and added that a residential automatic fire sprinkler system would most likely have protected the occupants, and facilitated their safe exit from the residence.
