The Greater Derry Track Club will be hosting one of its annual road races on January 23, 2011. The race, the Boston Prep 16 Mile Road Race, is now in its 16th year and will begin in Derry at 10 AM. One of New England’s most popular the race is considered a perfect Boston Marathon training event.
The race course is considered “Moderately Challenging” and runs along the country back roads of Derry and East Derry, New Hampshire. The “home base” of this year’s run will be the Derry West Running Brook Middle School, located near The Fairways Apartment complex on South Main Street.
Last year, 705 runners competed on a cool, clear day. Seven of the runners were from Derry and Londonderry, but both male and female overall winners came from Rhode Island. Former Pelham, NH resident Patrick Moulton averaged a time of 5:23 per mile and competed the event in one hour, 25 minutes, and 56 seconds. Moulton is currently a resident of Providence. Claire Gadrow, from South Kingston, RI, finished in one hour, 48 minutes and 47 seconds.
This year’s race is open to 900 runners. All participants receive a long sleeve half zip technical shirt. Chip timing, four on-course timing splits, mile markers every mile, and four on-course water or Gatorade stops will all be included in the race. Those who finish will receive hot soup and other refreshments.
Anyone interested in running can register online for $40. Mail-in registration is due January 15 and is $45. Registrations received after the 15th and those registered on race day are $50. All proceeds benefit the Greater Derry Track Club Kids Summer Running Programs held every year at Pinkerton Academy Track. Be sure to register early- the race has sold out in recent years.
Race day registrations and number pick-ups will be held at the Derry Village School starting at 8:30 AM on January 23. For more information, contact Race Director Dave Breeden at weluv2run(at)comcast.net, or 603-432-6865 or visit the Greater Derry Track Club website.
