This could be one of the last Londonderry Town Meetings ever, depending on the outcome of the Charter Commission and the voters of Londonderry at the polls next year.  Don’t miss history in action!  Selected as “The Best Form of Government” by the Producers of Government and Governance!

Looking for three forms of government, EBS, a Korea Broadcasting Company, selected Londonderry. “We looked in the US and found that Londonderry had the best form of government that demonstrated the example we were looking to give. You may not know, but Londonderry is famous for its government!” said Min Jung Lee Assistant Director of the EBS assigned to a special Documentary Team sent around the world to showcase three forms of government. While here shooting footage for this documentary, she also expressed how interesting it was that we could determine our own fate; in Korea, she told us, people do not participate in government it just happens around them. They have no control on the direction it takes. A few people get into power and control what they can and can’t have with no input possible.

In a written communication with the town planning the Production Government – Governance, Jeong Oak Lee, Producer for EBS said, “People are starting to believe “Town Meetings” can be a solution which is practicing democracy. And, Korea political system is trying to look more into this. Therefore, EBS is doing a documentary on this, and wants to visit Londonderry to learn more about what you have.”

In town for just a week they shot throughout the community. As it happened it was during the November 2008 nationwide elections, proving a challenge to explain and understand that the form of government we ran under was much different. As they asked for images of Town Meeting past and present for the production, 17,000 people voted in the presidential elections.

“Anybody and everybody who has a opinion gets a chance to tell us. The best part of this government is that whatever you want you can present, and it is what the majority of people do.” said Marty Bove Town Council Chairman at the time the video was taped. He also said, “Our government here is very transparent. We don’t sit down behind closed doors and make up the laws and the ordinances or spend money; we do that in front of everyone.”

“The town meeting form of government is a saying what you put into you get out of it. Citizens have an opportunity to become directly involved in the process. To control the direction of their community to control how much money the community will spend and how much taxes they will pay to support the community. So it is democracy at the grassroots.” said Dave Caron in the opening segment of Government – Governance produced by the Korea Educational Broadcasting System.
